Calling all Smurfs fans!

Your favorite blue '80s cartoon is on its way to theaters! I mean, is it really such a surprise? The creativity in Hollywood is sort of slacking these days.

Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures (who obtained film rights) are talking about creating a live action and animated film featuring the Smurf Village, Papa Smurf, and the rest of the blue gang. Oh, and David Stern and David Weiss, who wrote the second and third installments of Shrek are in talks to write the screenplay.

"The Smurfs are one of the best-known franchises, and among the most beloved collection of characters in the world," Columbia co-president Doug Belgrad said. "We're very excited to introduce a new generation to Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the other smurftastic Smurfs in all of their 'three-apple-tall' glory."

That's all fine and dandy and fans of the show will be heading to the theatres in droves. But what about the young people who can hardly remember the television show? Will they want to watch a bunch of little blue people running around?

Is it doomed to suffer the same fate as Speed Racer all because of an age gap?
