7 Trailers That Suggest the Best of Summer 2008 Moviegoing May Be Ahead of Us

It'll be hard to top Iron Man, one of the best comic book movies ever, or the excitement of seeing the Sex and the City gang back on the big screen, but there are several potentially great movies still on tap for this summer, especially if the movies live up to their intriguing trailers. Here's sneak peeks for the upcoming movies I can't wait to see this summer (big ups to Trailer Addict for the links) …

- Wanted (June 27) – It's not your average chick flick, but there's no denying that Angelia Angelina Jolie's acrobatic, gun-slingin' antics in this drama about assassins are among the action-packed flick's biggest draws. James McAvoy also appears to be perfectly cast as the office drone who's about to find out he was born to be a bullet-curving killer, and you can never go wrong with Morgan Freeman as the cool, wise mentor type.

- WALL*E (June 27) – The latest Pixar movie is about a trash-compacting robot, the titular WALL*E, who's left behind on Earth when the planet's citizens abandon it. The adorable, endearing little bot (confession: I've already got a couple of WALL*E toys on my desk) falls for a female robot named EVE, and, as you can see in this clip of a scene from the movie, WALL*E is determined to stick by his new love.

- Hancock (July 2) – He's the superhero everyone loves to hate, because, for every person he saves, there's another ten who've seen Hancock (Will Smith) drunk and belligerent and less-than-enthusiastic about his do-gooding work. Along comes PR specialist Ray (Jason Bateman) offering to do an image makeover and turn Hancock into the city's beloved hero, though everyone, from Ray's wife (Charlize Theron) to Hancock himself, doubts that's possible. With that line-up in a clever dramedy, can it possibly not be a great movie?

- The Dark Knight (July 18) – It's a given, with director Christopher Nolan and Batman Christian Bale returning with their follow-up to Batman Begins that this was going to be a must-see movie, but one glimpse at the late Heath Ledger's amazing, and yes, creepy, performance as The Joker and you'll be pre-buying your tickets for The Dark Knight. In fact, Ledger's Joker act has already sparked buzz of a potential Oscar nomination, which is all but unheard of for a comic book movie.

 - Mamma Mia! (July 18) – Meryl Streep singing and dancing to ABBA … need I say more?

 - Pineapple Express (Aug. 8) – The Judd Apatow gang rides again in this R-rated dark comedy (the trailer below is probably NSFW either) about a stoner (Seth Rogen) and his drug dealer (James Franco) who go on the lam when one of them witnesses a crooked cop (Rosie Perez) and a drug lord (Gary Cole) commit murder. The script was written by Rogen and his Superbad co-writer Evan Goldberg, and it looks every bit as funny as that summer '07 gem.

- Tropic Thunder (Aug. 15) – Another R-rated movie (and trailer), this comedy stars Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. as a group of spoiled actors making a war movie. But when their director gets fed up with their prima donna behavior, he decides to drop them in the middle of an actual war – unbeknownst to them – and let them fend for themselves. Hilarity, of course, ensues.

And one more trailer for a movie that isn't technically a summer release, but which, particularly on the heels of SATC, is another great excuse to round-up a group of your female buds and head to the movie theater:

- The Women (Sept. 12) – A remake of the classic 1939 movie based on Clare Boothe Luce's play, The Women stars Meg Ryan as a wealthy, successful society woman who thinks she's happily married until she finds out hubby is cheating with a hot shop girl (Eva Mendes). She leaves the louse and heads to fancy spa, where she bonds with her catty fellow society women, played by Candice Bergen, Debra Messing, Annette Bening, Carrie Fisher, Bette Midler and Jada Pinkett-Smith

And what about you … any other movies or movie trailers you're diggin' these days?

Where's X-Files? That's my must-see of the summer. And I just Sex and the City - wow, that was great! Much better than I expected.
